I signed up to mentor a 10-year-old at Cunningham Elementary through @seedlingmentors because I thought I was doing something good. Turns out I was also doing something smart. Teachers have a name for it: the protégé effect. You don’t really learn a thing until you have to teach it. Every question she asked me exposed a hole in my own understanding. Guess what? Those same holes were sitting in my business. Last night, I was researching K-Pop so I could teach her Korean. That’s not “charity.” That’s the most creative and out of my norm thing I did all week. Four reasons mentoring is the most underrated growth strategy an entrepreneur has: 1. You only truly learn what you have to teach. 2. Beginners ask the questions experts stopped asking. That is where creativity lives. 3. Teaching with no jargon, no budget, and no authority is creativity bootcamp. 4. It forces you out of “doer” and into “systems thinker” and systems are what scale. By the way, I tapped into @duolingo for the task. Structure, K-Pop song and 5 mins of learning (more or less if she wants) while we eat and build trust. Mentorship costs an hour a week. It pays you back in sharper thinking, better questions, and a version of your own business you can finally explain out loud. I was a Big with Big Brothers Big Sisters and my mentee @baybee_ig and I are still connected. And now she has kiddos of her own!!! Seedling pairs mentors with kids who have a parent who has been incarcerated, including deportation. There are kids on that list right now who just need one adult who shows up. So if you are an entrepreneur in #austin they need mentors! What do you need to learn? Drop it in the comments and let this post introduce you to your new mentor. #mentorship #entrepreneurship #creativity #learnbydoing
