🤔is @duolingo a good place to learn math? If you’ve used it let me know your thoughts in the comments. Here’s some things I’ve noticed after using it for 70+ days and jumping from Intro to Addition & Subtraction to 11th grade Algebra (and everything in between): Very Symbolic - The abstract math problems aren’t bad, but we should start with visuals that allow entry into the math content Patterns become too much - Math is so cool because of the patterns, but in the app the way they use the patterns makes it to where you don’t even have to look at the problem to know the answer The intended content vs what math you actually use - there were times that I was working in one math concept but wasn’t even using that to give the answer. Example slide of rounding…I rounded yes but then to give the answer I wasn’t doing anything related to rounding Visuals 🤦🏻‍♀️ - I was really disappointed in this area. I saw minimal use of visuals and most of the time the visual (a) wasn’t helpful, (b) wasn’t a developmentally appropriate visual, or (c) wasn’t even connected to the mathematics in the problem If you want to hear my take on Duolingo Math, I got to chat with my friends over at @flynneducation and we all shared our thoughts.
