@duolingo just launched a capsule collection in time for New York Fashion Week - and it’s one of the smartest brand moves I’ve seen this year. The best brand activations don’t feel like marketing. They feel like the brand being exactly who they already are, just in a new and relevant context. Phonetic spellings of designer names on every piece. Hermès. Bottega. Balenciaga. Funny, smart, completely owning it in true Duolingo fashion. The insight is sharper than the collection itself: fashion, like language, excludes people who haven’t learned the vocabulary yet. Duolingo’s whole reason for existing is to fix exactly that. The collection isn’t a stunt. It’s the mission applied somewhere new. That’s how you know a brand actually has a strategy, when every move they make, no matter how unexpected, still makes complete sense. I’m Sachee, co-founder of @thatsassythingdotcom. I’ve been building consumer brands since 2012 - and this is one brand everyone in marketing needs to study.
