Duolingo didn’t just build a streak. It built something people didn’t want to lose. That’s what makes this case interesting. A number becomes progress. Progress becomes identity. And suddenly, missing one day feels like losing something you’ve already built. But retention gets tricky here. Too rigid, and the user feels punished. Too forgiving, and the streak loses meaning. So the real product question isn’t: “How do we keep users coming back?” It’s: “How do we make returning feel worth it?” Duolingo’s experiments around streak wagers, recovery and lower-friction goals point to the same idea: Protect continuity, not compulsion. Because the strongest retention systems don’t just create habit. They protect the value behind the habit. Case 02 of Applied Consumer Strategy. What’s one product you keep coming back to without even thinking about it? #ConsumerBehaviour #ProductStrategy #MarketingStrategy #Duolingo #RetentionStrategy
