For me, stories like Mary’s are one of the most meaningful answers to ‘does Duolingo work?’ seeing how effective that learning can be when it shows up in someone’s real life. 442 days ago, I helped Mary start learning Spanish on @duolingo . Today, she has a 442-day streak and nearly 200,000 XP. 🔥💚 But what I love most it’s what she’s been able to do with what she’s learned. Last year, while I was an intern, my college friend @lauren.pappy visited the Duolingo office with her family. Her mom, Dr. Mary Knights, is a pediatrician in Louisville, KY, and during the visit she became really interested in Duolingo. Mary told me she wanted to learn Spanish to better understand and connect with her Spanish-speaking patients and their families. Later, over dinner at Duo’s Taqueria, I helped her set up an account and start learning. Fast forward to today, that learning is showing up in her everyday life. She can understand more of what her Spanish-speaking patients and families are saying and use some of what she’s learned to help create a more welcoming environment. Interpreters are still essential in healthcare and used when needed, but knowing even some of someone’s language can add another layer of human connection. That part means a lot to me. I remember when I couldn’t speak English and how much it meant when someone made an effort to communicate with me, even if they only knew a few words. It made me feel seen and welcomed. Sometimes, hearing a familiar word or realizing someone is making an effort to understand you can completely change how a space feels. And Mary didn’t stop with herself. She’s gotten friends involved too, and now they share their Duolingo progress and streaks with each other, and using what they have learned to help other people.🥹💚 I recently got to catch up with Mary and celebrate her progress with a little 3D-printed Duo I made, and a plushie!
