Protesters gathered in Madrid after the death of Maricarmen Abascal, 87, whose eviction sparked nationwide protests in Spain. Tributes were paid to the pensioner who became a symbol of the country's housing crisis. Messages laid at the scene read "it's not a death, it's a killing", "the fight will continue" and "Maricarmen, the grandmother of the whole country", among others. Abascal was forcibly removed on a stretcher from her apartment of more than 70 years on 23 September after she was unable to afford steep rent increases.
