It is still not clear exactly what led to the worker at a Siberian plague research laboratory falling ill. Russian officials say they are investigating the death of the 28-year-old employee and have not confirmed that the suspected disease is pneumonic plague. They insist there is no risk of an epidemic. The head of the World Health Organization has called for more transparency from Russia, and requested further information on the lab tests on the individual who died. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, President Putin's spokesman said Russia's reporting of the death to the WHO was in line with standard practice, and accused the media of reporting "false information".
