Across Afghanistan, a desperate search for water has resulted in the drilling of hundreds of thousands of deep, narrow and hard-to-spot holes, turning farmers’ fields into death traps. Five-year-old Zainullah had fallen down a narrow, dried-up well while playing with friends - remarkably he survived before eventually being rescued by an 11-year-old boy. In the past five years, rescuers say hundreds of Afghans have fallen down borewells not properly capped after being emptied of water. People falling into abandoned wells is not uncommon in South Asia, but in Afghanistan it has been exacerbated by a number of events, according to experts.
